Photographs and Images

Videos, images and media files are protected by copyright in the same way as printed materials. Using images without permission for personal, educational or commercial use is against the law. Many collections are copyright-cleared for use in education but some may have restrictions so it is your responsibility to check the terms of use relating to any images you wish to use.

The University has some guidelines on copyright for University staff and students.

Much material online is made available for educational and other use under Creative Commons Licenses.

You should also look at the government guidance on exceptions to copyright in case it proves useful.

Check licence details for each website and image before use,as these will vary

Copyright does not need to be sought for undergraduate work unless it is used for commercial use.

The images used should be:

  • Used solely to illustrate a point
  • Not be for commercial purposes
  • Must be fair dealing (Use low rather than high resolution, limit the time that the material is available, not impact the market for the original material and be restricted to enrolled students if on a VLE
  • Must be accompanied by sufficient acknowledgement
