Harvard Referencing Guide (not including LHS): Single named author

 

Harvard Style of Citing References

When using Harvard, references are identified in the text by the author's surname and the year of publication:

  • If the author's name is mentioned in the text, add the publication year in brackets.
  • If the sentence contains a piece of quoted text, add the page number as well, separated by a comma.
  • If the authors name is not mentioned in your text, include both the author's name AND the publication year in brackets.

 

In text examples:

According to Pritchard (2018), people may have a partiality for one type of learning style over others...

OR

As Cottrell (2013, p.97) indicates, “your performance as a student is likely to improve if you...reflect on how you learn”, so that you...

OR

Whether drug companies have created the market for ‘depression’ (Healy, 2005) or merely react to it...


In your list of references:

Author's Surname(s), INITIALS. (Year of Publication) Title of book. Edition (if needed). Place of Publication: Publisher.

e.g.

Argenti, P. (2016) Corporate responsibility. Los Angeles, CA: Sage.

Ó Máille, T. (2002) An béal beo. 3rd ed. Baile Átha Cliath: An Gúm.
