In text:

Give the Title and year of the Act, SI or SR (with section, sub section or paragraph, if appropriate) in FULL in the text. For subsequent mentions of the same legislation, you may abbreviate the title. (You should provide the relevant abbreviation when the legislation is first mentioned in the text). 

e.g.

… the far-reaching judicial role ushered in by the Human Rights Act 1998 (HRA 1998)

then

…as indicated by the HRA 1998, s 6.

Case Law

In text:

Cite the party names in italics. There is no need to include the year.

e.g.

The landmark case of Donoghue v Stevenson 

or

 … as was illustrated in R v Brown 

For any subsequent mention of the case, you can either repeat the case name in full or refer only to the first party name, as long as there is no confusion with other cases in your work. 

e.g.

… the earlier Court of Sessions decision in Donoghue ... 

or

Templeman LJ argued in Brown that ...

Cite any law reports from library databases as if they were print reports.

Party names [separated by a v, if appropriate] [Year published] volume number (if relevant) Abbreviation for Law Report series Starting page of case (Court abbreviation, if pre-2001).

e.g.

Nothman v London Borough of Barnet [1979] 1 WLR 67 (HL).

or

Re A (conjoined twins) [2000] 4 All ER 961 (CA).

 
Neutral Citations

Introduced to identify freely available online judgments, independent of any law report series. Cases are numbered consecutively throughout the year.

Party names (separated by a v) [Year heard] Court Abbreviation Case No.

e.g.

NI Housing Executive v Healthy Buildings (Ireland) Ltd [2014] NICA 27.

Note: where both a print and neutral citation is available, cite both (neutral citation first). Separate the citations by a comma. 

e.g.

AR v Homefirst Community Trust [2005] NICA 8, [2005] NI 435.
