Being organised and having a plan before you start searching for material is essential. This is known as The Search Strategy and follows the following steps.

  1. Begin with a clear and focused research question.
  2. Decide where you are going to search.
  3. Identify main keywords and search terms.
  4. Carry out the search.
  5. Review, refine and rerun (if necessary).
  6. Save all searches.
  7. Save all useful articles (RefWorks can help with this).

Finding Existing Literature Reviews

Before you start, check if any literature reviews have been carried out in your topic area, use the keyword, review or literature review to limit a search.

e.g. 3d printing and literature review

Finding a review on similar topics (even when the scope and context is different) can help with quickly identifying key articles and key search terms. Look at the reference lists and keywords assigned to the review by the authors and by the databases for help.
