Computing, Engineering and Built Environment Staff and Researchers Support: Library Services for Staff

What you need

The University staff and student ID cards both operate as a library card and are needed for borrowing books at the self-issue machines or at the Information Points.

Those undertaking academic work for the University who are not a member of University Staff, but wish to make use of the Library, will need to apply for  library borrowing and access to online resources as an associate through the A3M System (Application Access & Associate Management)– application should be made by contacting your Faculty’s RAD Authoriser, details are available from: A3M System - Departmental Authorisers.

Services for Staff

Detailed guidance and advice is provided by the Computing, Engineering and Built Environment Subject team. New members of staff should meet with their Subject Librarian as early as possible to discuss our full range of services and how we can fulfill your teaching or research requirements.

We can also:

  • Offer expert advice and guidance about our resources
  • Teach information skills to all levels of users
  • Source quality information for individual research interests and projects
  • Manage the development of book collections, journal subscriptions and electronic resources
  • Inputting to new course development and curriculum design in accordance with the University’s Integrated Curriculum Design Framework (ICDF)
  • Provide advice on citing references and the use of RefWorks bibliographical management software
  • Provide citation tracking and analysis support (bibliometrics)
  • Support course evaluation and revalidation

The Library Collection Development Policy sets out the general framework within which the Library operates to select, manage and review content from the Library’s collection of information resources.

Reading Lists

The Library Reading List Service can turn printed module reading lists into an online document providing links to physical and online resources including but not limited to:

  • Print books
  • eBooks
  • Electronic journal articles
  • Webpages
  • Scans of print book chapters and journal articles

Lists can be structured in the same way as module handbooks, for example required, recommended, weekly or topic.

To view existing Reading Lists go to the website, search by module code or lecturer name.

How many books can I borrow?

  • Staff can borrow 25 two month loans; 4 two week loans; 4 two day loans. 

Two month and two week loan items can be renewed twice.

The Library Catalogue indexes over 1 million items in print and eBook formats, and is available both on and off campus.

Using the ‘Reserve this item’ option within the Catalogue you can,

  • Request and Collect  - this service enables you to reserve a book and collect it from your chosen campus
  • Request books currently on loan
  • Request books held at another campus

Subject Guides

The CEBE Subject Team have produced a range of guides providing advice on locating, searching and accessing specialist resources for your course. Find details of the specialist resources including, books, journals, databases, internet resources available and how to use information for assignments and research.

Scanning Service for Copyright Material

The Library offers a centralised Scanning Service for material which is made accessible through a reading list on Blackboard Learn.

For any given module, under the terms of the Copyright Licencing Agency's Higher Education Licence, we are limited to scanning one chapter (or 10%) from a book or one article (or 10%) from a journal issue.

Please note that not all publications are covered by the Licence. To check if a title is covered go to the CLA Title Search.

Document Delivery

If you require material (journal articles, books and book chapters) the Library doesn't have in stock then you can request it using theonline order form
