Theses: Introduction

Theses and dissertations form a body of original and advanced research and could be a useful resource for your own research.  Ulster University theses can be found in the Library Catalogue - search using title, author or keyword details and select the ‘Theses’ option from the Format menu. Theses are for consultation only but may be photocopied according to Library regulations.  Sources of other theses are listed in other sections, on this page.

From 2017 Ulster PhD theses have made made available online on the PURE website are are no longer available as print.

Theses in the UK and Ireland

EThOS - (Electronic Theses Online Service)

Thesis digitization service from the British Library. To download a thesis, you must first register so that you are able to login. Registration is free.

A list of participating UK HE institutions is available at http://ethos.bl.uk/HEIList.do

In cases where a thesis from a non-participating institution is required, application should be made through Document Delivery.COPAC

Searches the main UK and Irish university and national libraries. Use ‘Material Type’ Theses on the Main Search tab.

RIAN: Pathways to Irish Research

Brings together in one Portal the contents of the institutional repositories of the seven Irish universities. Some thesis material is included.

General  sources
DART-Europe E-theses Portal - DART-Europe is a partnership of research libraries and library consortia who are working together to improve global access to European research theses and provides access to around 100,000 full-text research theses from 12 European countries

Google Scholar can be a useful tool to identify potential resources.

Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations.  Excellent starting point for tracing the existence of online theses. Maintains a searchable catalogue of e-theses and a directory of links to key websites. Catalogue of theses and doctoral dissertations contributed by some 176 Universities and 27 Institutions worldwide.

Open Access Thesis and Dissertations (OATD) An index of over 2.2 million records of post-graduate thesis and dissertations from 43 countries.  OATD.org only searches thesis that are available via Open Access.
