Bibliometrics & Citation Analysis: Your Research
Profile

Your Research Profile

It is really important that you are consistent with your name and institution when you publish.

  • Author identifier tools enable you to control your profile and overcome issues associated with variations of name spellings or institutions. Below are some useful tools for helping to improve your profile, and keeping track of your research outputs.
  • Acknowledge your affiliation with the University. As a University employee or PhD researcher, when publishing journal articles and other works associated with research undertaken at the University you should declare your primary affiliation to be Ulster University. There is no need to state your campus as part of the affiliation. You may also wish to include your school or research group, but listing the University first is the safest method for ensuring that the institution (and thus the appropriate school and research group) receives credit for the publication in bibliographic databases and bibliometric analyses. Example: Ulster University, School of Computing, …
Where an author has a substantive or honorary contract with the University and, say, an NHS Trust, both organisations can appear as affiliations in submissions for publication. It is recommended that authors with joint affiliations use separate lines for each institution. For example:  a) Ulster University, School of Nursing …; & b) Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, Belfast, United Kingdom.

ORCID is an independent, open source system. It provides a persistent unique digital identifier that distinguishes researchers from others. It is used to integrate in key research workflows such as manuscript and grant submission, and supports automated linkages between you and your professional activities ensuring that your work is recognised. It is now compulsory to have an ORCID ID when submitting to many publishers, and increasingly for funders too.

Scopus Author IDentifier from Elsevier helps to disambiguate author names. Using complex algorithms the tool automatically matches variations of the author's name and distinguishes between authors with the same name. The algorithms behind the Author Identifier assign a unique identifier number to each author whose published articles are covered by Scopus. By using these numbers, the algorithms review all variants of authors’ names and are able to match authors’ names with 99% accuracy.

Scopus allocates an Author Details page to each author or researcher whose publications are covered by Scopus. This page gives authors an overview of data associated with that author,  including h-index. There is an Author feedback wizard which allows the author to check their details and inform Scopus if information needs to be amended. Follow the step by step guide here. If you need any help please contact your Subject Librarian.

UKRI have chosen Web of Science to provide the analytics data to the REF panels who are using citation data as one indicator of "academic significance". In Web of Science, researchers are assigned an individual ID called a WoS ResearcherID. Once this has been created, publications affiliated to the researcher are added to their profile.  ResearcherID assigns a unique number to all researchers that links them with their published works. This is particularly useful in terms of any possible name variations or institutional affiliation changes. You can then update your profile information and build your publication list within your account using Web of Science.
To increase the impact of your research, you must regularly check your WoS ResearcherID profile to ensure all your publications have been correctly affiliated to you, and that multiple profiles have not been created. ResearcherID also provides a variety of citation metrics including h-index, career citation count, citations per paper and collaboration metrics. If your subject area is well covered in Web of Science then it is advantageous to use ResearcherID. However, ResearcherID does not automatically update with new publications, Each author will need to keep their list/account up to date. If you leave the institution your account can be taken with you.

How to review/update your Author Profile in Web of Science

Authors can now claim ownership of their Author Records and manage their Web of Science identities via Publons, creating a unique Web of Science ResearcherID. Publons provides a 360-degree view of researchers’ activity – giving you a single profile to manage your identities. The changes researchers makes to their publication record in Publons will seamlessly update publication records in Web of Science Core Collection and ORCID.Read more about this here.
