RefWorks Changes

A new improved version of RefWorks will soon be available to our users.

When exporting from the library catalogue and databases you will now be offered a choice between sending your references to Legacy RefWorks or New RefWorks.  Please select the Legacy version on the left, with the round orange logo.  We will notify all users when the new version is ready.

RefWorks training

It is advisable to attend a RefWorks class.  These are held on all campuses fortnightly throughout the year, on different days and at different times.  Students and staff are welcome to attend as often as they need to.

A booking and information button is available from the Library & ICT page of the Portal. This will show the date of the next available session.

Classes can also be arranged by lecturers or students by contacting their subject librarian.

    Before you start .....

In order to make the best use of RefWorks you first need to have a basic knowledge of referencing.  Click on the links below for help.

    Ulster University Referencing Guides

      What is RefWorks?

RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic management service which allows you to collect, organise and store references from a variety of sources, such as books, journal articles and websites.

It can then help you to quickly produce bibliographies, reference lists and in-text citations in a range of referencing styles, e.g. Harvard, Vancouver, MLA.

This only needs to be done once.

Complete the information in the Create Account boxes using your University of Ulster email address and then click on Register.

You will receive a confirmation email with information on updating your email address and personal profile.  If you need to do this, please contact a member of the RefWorks Team for help.  You will not need to use the Login Name contained in this email.

In addition to our regular classes,  online video tutorials and PDF help files are available from within the RefWorks database.  These can be found under the Help function of the toolbar.

Advice on downloading the Write-n-Cite and RefGrab-It add-ins can be found under the Tools function of the toolbar.

          How to access RefWorks

RefWorks can be accessed, both on and off-campus, by logging into the Portal, clicking on the Library & ICT tab and then selecting RefWorks from the A - Z list of databases.

Alternatively, click here and then on Proceed on the Library link page.

If you encounter any problems logging in to RefWorks, or any of our electronic resources, consult our Off Campus Guide.  It has a section on What to do if asked for an "Athens" password.

              RefWorks Alumni Program

Graduates and former members of staff of the University of Ulster can continue to use RefWorks through the RefWorks Alumni Program.

Those who already have a RefWorks account when they graduate or retire will be able to transfer their references into an Alumni account.  This account needs to be set up before leaving Ulster University.   Instructions are available in the PDF document below.
