RefWorks: Troubleshooting

Problems Importing References from a Database

If you are unable to see a means of exporting references to Refworks you may need to save the references in a different way.

Details for the databases that need extra steps are listed in the Adding References page.

MacUsers and Write n Cite

Mac Users with Microsoft Word 2016 will not be able to use Write n Cite  but should download RefWorks Citation Manager.

RCM is available on Word as an add in.

To install

  • Open Word
  • Open the Insert tab
  • Select Add-ins
  • Search for RefWorks and select RefWorks Citation Manager and click Add.

For more information on installing and using RCM visit the Adding In-text citations - RefWorks Citation Manager (RCM) page.

Using RCM on an iPad or similar device

For more information on Add-ons visit the RefWorks Help page

  • RCM is not compatible with the Word app on iPad.
  • Instead use the web based version of Microsoft Word available from the Ulster Portal.
  • Login to the Ulster Portal https://portal.ulster.ac.uk and open the Office 365 tile.
  •  From there you should be able to access the web-based version of Word.
  • Add RCM to Word via managed add-ins (look for the 'Add-in' button on the 'Home' menu).

Error message when signing into RCM using institution login

If you see an error message when using the "Use login from my institution"  for RefWorks Citation Manager (RCM) in Microsoft Word or Google Docs,  you will need to create a username and password.

See the instructions below to create this.

When an entry shows as generic

Some items will import into RefWorks as Generic.  These may have unnecessary URLs attached and may be missing key information.

To ensure the citation displays correctly in your bibliography you should change this to the appropriate format e.g. Bookor Book edited collection if an edited book, journal article etc.).

  1. Click on the entry so that the information appears in the screen on the right.
  2. Click on the pencil to enable editing, choose format from the menu that appears using the down arrow beside Generic eg book.
  3. Select save to finish.

Duplication

  • It is advised that after importing references to RefWorks you wait 24 hours to start deduplication.
  • The current maximum that can be de-duplicated is 2,000.

For more information on the deduplication process visit the Managing References page.

RCM and Changing Fonts in Word

RCM uses the default Word font regardless of the font used in the paragraph.

For information about changing the default font go to Change the default font in Word.

Using more than one font If you are using more than one font in your document, the following is recommended:

  • When document writing has been completed, apply the desired fonts to all text sections
  • Place the cursor in text that has the font you want to use for the citations and bibliography
  • Update the document via RCM by pressing the Refresh button
