Information Skills Tutorial: Combining Your Search Terms

Combining searches

Ireland AND Famine

Here AND is used to find journal articles which contain the keywords Ireland and Famine.

Only results in the overlapping area in the middle will be included in the search results.

Using the operator AND  will narrow your search and produce a smaller set of results.

Russia OR USSR

In the example below OR is used to find journal articles which contain either of the keywords Russia or USSR or both.

Results from either circle will be included in the search results.

Using the operator OR in your search will produce a greater number of results.

Race NOT Discrimination

Here Not is used to find journal articles which contain the keyword Race but not the keyword Discrimination.

Using the NOT operator in your search will produce a smaller number of results.
