Citation searching is when we use one article to find others and works both backwards and forwards in time. It is a good way to identify additional material on a topic, especially if research is limited.
- Looking at the reference list of an article, you can see the previous research on a topic, including seminal papers.
- Forward or cited by searching will then identify any publications that have referenced the original article since it was published. This is a way of bringing research up to date and seeing impact.
- Both are also good ways to identify key, hard to find material on a topic e.g. reports, websites etc.
