How to use the Library catalogue - Transcript

In this video, I would like to demonstrate how to find a print book using our library catalogue.

The first thing you need to do is log on to the portal at Portal.ulster.ac.uk and when you have logged in, locate your library tile within the dashboard, click on the library tile to go to the library homepage at Ulster.ac.uk/ Library.

On the library homepage, you can access the library catalogue from the banner heading at the top of the page or from under the Quick Links menu. Click on the library catalogue to go into the tool. Within the library catalogue, you will find a single search box Here you can search for books and eBooks using either keywords, the title of the book, the author or a subject area. When you search for a book, you will be presented with both the e-book and the print book collections.

On the left hand side of the page, you can filter. The results to either a campus library or to the ebook Collection. You can also filter by the year published and to the different formats or loan types. Another feature on the library catalogue is the sorted by tool at the top right hand corner of the screen. This tool defaults to relevance, to bring the most appropriate resources to the top of your list But if you click on the downward menu, you can also retrieve books and sort them by the newest published.

Once you have your list, you can access the resource and look at the book record either by clicking on check availability or the title of the book. Once you're in the book record, you can see where the book is located. If you click on the arrow within the different campus libraries, you can get information on the shelf-mark, and this is where the book is located within the campus library., the type of loan, and whether or not the book is currently available.

Another feature within the library catalogue is the Reserve this item feature. This feature will allow you to reserve items from other campus libraries. Click on the button and state which campus library you would like to collect your book from. You can also use a service to request books from your campus library. If you want to use a book but you might not be available to collect the book for a few days.

You can reserve the book in advance and it will be issued to the reservation shelf for you to collect. Please wait to receive an email from the library before travelling to collect reserved items.

If any questions about using or accessing the library catalogue, please contact your subject Librarian.
