E-journals Video Transcript

In this short video, I'm going to show you how to get access to the full text of an electronic journal article when you have been given the reference. We're going to use this reference as an example.

Start with the library homepage - that is ulster.ac.uk/library Scroll down on the library homepage to the Quick Links menu and you will see a number of buttons. We're looking for the one that is called Electronic Journals A to Z. This is a list of all of the electronic journal titles that we subscribe to. If you're presented with an open Athens authentication screen at this point, simply type in Ulster and click the Ulster University link that appears to give you seamless access to our resources.

The Publication Finder contains all of the titles of journals that we have access to electronically. There is a space in the box for you to put the title of the journal. Remember, this is not the article title, it's the journal title. The one we're looking for is Personnel Review. So I'm going to type that into the box now. When I click search, I get a set of results that contain the words personnel and review. The one I'm looking for is at the top of the list.

Just beneath the information about the journal itself, there are a number of links. These are the three different sources from which we can get access to this particular journal. It's important to pay attention to the words that are underneath the links, because they tell you what the holdings are for this journal. In this case the article I'm looking for was published in 2016, so any of these different entry points will give me access to full text. I'm going to click the top one.

This takes you through into a database and the home page for that particular journal within a database. From here you're looking for a list of volumes or issues. On this particular interface, it allows me to select the year first. And from then I can select volume 45, issue number one, which is where my journal article is located. And then that allows me to look at the table of contents for that particular issue.

Once I scroll down I can get access to my journal article that I'm looking for. You can find it in a number of different formats usually. There is the read online full text or - and something that we recommend you do - if you click on the PDF icon, then that should take you straight into the PDF version of a journal article.

If you need any further help in accessing or using the electronic journals catalogue get in touch. Either contact library help or contact your subject librarian.
