Law: Find Legislation

Where can I find Westminster / EU legislation?

The library will supply you with all UK (Westminster) legislation online.  Always check the EXTENT section to see if the legislation applies in Northern Ireland.

Here are the top databases to search:

Where can I find Northern Ireland legislation?

The major databases, such as Lexis+ UK and Westlaw UK  do not have COMPLETE coverage of full text updated Northern Ireland legislation

  • Westlaw UK has the consolidated (updated and revised) legislation for NI from 1991 onwards and some older "as enacted" (i.e., not updated) legislation.
  • Lexis+ UK does not cover 'NI only' legislation in its ordinary legislative content but includes NI legislation via Valentine: All Law of Northern Ireland. This is available in Lexis+ UK under the Book sources.

At present the best free source for original and updated NI Acts, Orders and Statutory Rules is the official Legislation.gov.uk website below. There may be delays in revisions being uploaded to this source, so use with some caution.

Don't forget that many Acts of the UK Parliament (Westminster) extend to Northern Ireland.  Use the Finding Legislation tab for help on locating these.  The Extent section at the end of the Act, before any Schedules, will tell you whether an Act extends to Northern Ireland.

Best Sources for Legislation on the Internet

Note: Northern Ireland legislation coverage can be rather incomplete in some of the sites below.

You should ALWAYS check the extent of any legislation which does not contain Northern Ireland or NI in the title, to see if it applies here.

Statutory Interpretation - 2 Useful videos from TheLawBank.co.uk

The videos give a useful introduction to the issue of statutory interpretation, with references to cases which illustrate the legal points.

Take a look at this video from Duncan Bunce. The whole video is useful but see particularly  the sections from 9min 21 secs onwards, where he explains Intrinsic and Extrinsic aids to statutory interpretation.

Finding legislation - getting started

Cases and Materials textbooks summarise the leading cases and key legislation in a subject area, and provide an excellent starting point.  Use the Library Catalogue to find them in the library.

In addition, statutes can also be found in a number of books such as Blackstone's Statutes. Theses series provide updated legislation for a range of specific legal topics. They can also be found on the Library Catalogue.

Finding Journal articles or Cases about a piece of legislation

Use a textbook to identify the major legislation on your topic.  Then search for the Act using the Legislation search in Westlaw or Lexis+ UK

In Westlaw: open any individual section of an Act to trigger the Legislation Analysis menu (on the left of the results page). This will list any Cases or  Journal articles about that particular section of legislation.

In Lexis+ UK: choose either the complete Act or a specific section and see the related  Cases or Journals in the 'Find out More' box on the right of the screen. This will show any articles or cases relating to the whole act or the specific section (depending on the choice made).

Northern Ireland legislation is not fully covered by Westlaw or Lexis+ UK so there is limited linking to related articles or cases.
