Built Environment: EDGE

What is the EDGE/EDGE Excel Award?

The EDGE Award is administrated by the Career Development Centre and is designed to provide official University recognition for the extra activities you undertake at Ulster outside of your degree programme.

To complete the EDGE Award you must choose and complete 4 approved activities from at least 2 out of the 4 categories available during the course of your degree.

The EDGE Award can prove valuable in demonstrating the breadth of your extra-curricular skills and experiences to potential employers.  To find out more about the overall EDGE Award, contact the Employability and Careers Service or login to the Employability Portal.

Developing Lifelong Information Literacy Skills

What do I need to do for the Library EDGE activity?

In this activity, you will have the opportunity to evaluate your current information literacy skills, reflect on your development of these skills through attendance at workshops and the production of evidence showing critical evaluation of the research methodology adopted on a current topic of interest.

To complete the activity, you will need to:

IDENTIFY - Identify key concepts on the chosen topic

SELECT - Select suitable keywords/subject terms for each concept (eg. mind mapping; brainstorming etc.)

CONSIDER - Identify appropriate information sources (primary and secondary sources)

PLAN - Develop a suitable search strategy (application of Boolean operators; phrase searching; truncation/wildcard searching; proximity searching etc.)

EVALUATE - Select useful references (based on quality, relevancy, bias; currency etc.)

REFINE - Review the search strategy (refining as necessary)

MANAGE - Organise and manage potentially useful references (eg. manual referencing or RefWorks)

PRESENT - Communicate and present main findings effectively and appropriately

You can present your evidence as an evidence-based portfolio or presentation. A key aspect of your activity is reflection - your Library mentor will support you with this and other tasks.
