Acts of Parliament - Pre 1963

The required elements for the reference are:

Short title of act including year. (Regnal year, chapter number), Place of publication: Publisher. 

Reference List

Example of the full reference at the end of your assignment:  
Suicide Act 1961. (9 and 10 Eliz. 2, c.60), London: HMSO.

 

In-text citation 

Example 1 - where the title of the act occurs naturally in the sentence

The in-text citation will have the full title of the act in italics

Section 9 and 10 of the Suicide Act 1961 states that..... 

Example 2 - where the title of the act does not occur naturally in the sentence

..and this is described in this act (Suicide Act 1961).

Points to note:

  • Click here to link to the this act - identify the reference elements as stated above.
  • For Acts prior to 1963, the regnal year and parliamentary session are included.
  • The regnal year is the number of years since the monarch's succession.  In the example above, the regnal year details are 9 and 10 Eliz. 2.
  • c.60 is the chapter number and refers to the 60th act passed during the session that started in the 9th year of the reign of Elizabeth II and which finished in the 10th year of that reign
