Life and Health Sciences Harvard Referencing Guidelines

Journal Article

Journal Article (Original in print)

The required elements to reference a journal article that originated in print are:

Author Surname, INITIALS. (Year) Title of article. Title of Journal, volume number (issue or part number, if present), page numbers of the article.

For two authors - separate the author details using and.  For example,

Author Surname, INITIALS. and Author Surname, INITIALS. (Year) Title of article. Title of Journal, volume number(issue or part number, if present), page numbers of the article.

For more than two authors separate the author details using a comma and placing and between the penultimate and final authors.  For example:

Author Surname, INITIALS., Author Surname, INITIALS., Author Surname, INITIALS. and Author Surname, INITIALS.(Year) Title of article. Title of Journal, volume number(issue or part number, if present), page numbers of the article.

Example of the full reference at the end of your assignment

Kontos, A.P. (2017) Concussion in sport: psychological perspectives. Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology, 6(3), 215-219.

In-text citation 

Example 1 - where the author's name occurs naturally in the sentence

Kontos (2017) suggests that over 4 million athletes are affected by concussions in the US every year.

Example 2 - where the author's name does not occur naturally in the sentence

Concussions in athletes pose a significant health concern (Kontos 2017).

 

 

Journal Article (Online)

Option 1:

If the online journal article is identical in layout and pagination to the printed version, e.g. a pdf or scan, reference it as if it was print.  If not, reference it as follows:

Author Surname, INITIALS. (Year) Title of article. Title of Journal, volume number(issue or part number), page numbers of the article (if available). Available at: URL [Accessed date].

Reference List

Example of the full reference at the end of your assignment:

Casey, M., Bates, S.P., Galloway, K.W., Galloway, R.K., Hardy, J.A., Kay, A.E., Kirsop, P. and McQueen, H.A. (2014) Scaffolding student engagement via online peer learning. European Journal of Physics, 35. Available at: http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/0143-0807/35/4/045002/pdf [Accessed 7 August 2018].

In-text citation

Example 2 - where the author's name does not occur naturally in the sentence

Student engagement with the PeerWise system ( Casey et al. 2018) ...

 

Option 2:

If the online article is from an internet only journal, reference as follows:

Author Surname, INITIALS. (Year) Title of article. Title of Journal, volume number(issue or part number), page numbers of the article (if available). Available at: URL [Accessed date].

Example of the full reference at the end of your assignment:

Paaske, S., Bauer, A., Moser, T. and Seckman, C. (2017) The benefits and barriers to RFID technology in healthcare. Online Journal of Nursing Informatics, 21(2). Available at: http://www.himss.org/library/benefits-and-barriers-rfid-technology-healthcare [Accessed 7 August 2018].

In-text citation 

Example 1 - where the author's name occurs naturally in the sentence

According to Paaske et al. (2018) ... 

Example 2 - where the author's name does not occur naturally in the sentence

The barriers and benefits of RFID are well documented (Paaske et al. 2018)

 

Option 3:

Digital Object Identifier (doi)

A ‘doi’ often replaces the URL as it is the permanent identifier for the source, and so therefore it is not necessary to include an accessed date.  Do not include a full stop after the doi.

Author Surname, INITIALS. (Year) Title of article. Title of Journal, volume number (issue or part number). doi

Fang, J., Song, H., Zhang, Y., Li, Y. and Liu, J. (2018) Climate-dependence of ecosystem services in a nature reserve in northern China. PLoS ONE, 13(2). doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0192727

According to Fang et al. (2018)...

Example 2 - where the author's name does not occur naturally in the sentence

The value of ecosystems is affected by... (Fang et al. 2018).

Other points to note

Points to note: 

  • In absence of page numbers, please provide a full url and accessed date. 
  • An article may have an article number instead of page numbers. In this case, please include the article number and provide a full url and accessed date as per the example below:

  • If no part/issue number is given in the article, leave this information out of the reference - do not add (0) or ().
  • The reference has all pages that the article runs from and to; not just the page/s from which you get relevant information.
