Life and Health Sciences Harvard Referencing Guidelines: Several works by the same author/s in different years

If more than one publication from an author or the same two or more authors illustrate the same point and the works are published in different years, then the references should be cited in chronological order (i.e. earliest first).

Reference List

Example of the full reference at the end of your assignment:

McKenna, H. (1997) Nursing theories and models. London: Routledge. 

McKenna, H. (2010) Nursing theories and models. 2nd ed. London: Routledge. 

In-text citation

Example 1 - where the author's name occurs naturally in the sentence - one author/different years:

…as suggested by McKenna (1997, 2010) who found that…

Example 2 - where the author's name does not occur naturally in the sentence - one author/different years:

Decisions on caring for the elderly (McKenna 1997, 2010) should consider …

Reference List

Example of the full reference at the end of your assignment for two same authors in different years:

Ryan, J. and McKenna, H. (2012) Nursing theories and models. London: Routledge. 

Ryan, J. and McKenna, H. (2013) Nursing theories and models. 2nd ed. London: Routledge.

In-text citation

Example 1 - where the author's name occurs naturally in the sentence - one author/different years:

…as suggested by Ryan and McKenna (2012, 2013) who looked at the care of the elderly.

Example 2 - where the author's name does not occur naturally in the sentence - one author/different years:

Decisions on caring for the elderly (Ryan and McKenna 2012, 2013) should consider …

Points to note: 

• If using a referencing tool, such as RefWorks, this may appear as: 

Recent research on nursing models (McKenna 1997, McKenna 2010) found that..... 

This is still acceptable.
